Pokemon: The Dark Side

scary pikachu

These shirts were found in Akihabara (Tokyo, Japan). I generally don’t get scared often but this is just disgusting.

Google reader

Google Reader

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Google Reader which got me intrigued. However I remained firm in my decision to refrain from using Web-based Feed Readers. Then an article on Lifehacker (which for some reason I only recently read) got me interested in Google Reader. So I decided to give it a try and I must say I’m pleasantly surprised.

Combined with Google Gears, I can access my feeds offline for those, seemingly more frequent, offline moments. Google Reader has a folder system similar (for me) to their label system in Gmail, which I love. And with true Google genius it has a ‘trend’ section which tracks which feeds I access the most, which get updated the most, etc. I also have the option to share my feeds or a specific article with other people and can access Google Reader via a cellphone. In short, there are a lot of really interesting things in Google Reader that need to be checked out by anyone who uses syndication feeds on a daily basis.

I don’t think I’ll leave RSSOwl just yet. I’m still not very sure about the whole web-based news aggregators. If Google offered the option of a desktop-based app for Google Reader then I would be over it instantly but that is, unfortunately, not the case as of yet.

Just my 2 cents on Google Reader.

Fixed!

The sidebar (and the footer) are finally fixed. They no longer appear insanely small. At first I thought I might have messed up with the sidebar template or the single template but that wasn’t it. For days I mulled over what could cause the permalinked pages and not the main page to be affected. Then it came to me: the comment file!

The comment file was the one I had been messing around with the most (aside from the stylesheet) because I wanted a specific type of a template for the comments. It turns out that the problem was I had forgotten to close a <small> tag.

Now I feel incredibly stupid because:

  • I forgot to close the tag
  • I didn’t realize it might have been the comment file for the longest time

Retargeting

I recently found this video on the net and it is simply brilliant.

I personally can’t wait until this becomes a common practice. Which of course will put pressure on those that are unable to allow retargeting in their images.

My favourite aspect is the ability to erase parts of an image (remove seams). This is so much simpler than going into photoshop, removing what needs to be removed and then spending an hour or so recreating the background lost.

Ramaḍān

Although I’m not very religious I am still Muslim therefore I fast. Today was the first day of my fast and it isn’t really all that hard. Wake up around 5:15 for food, then no food till sunset. I had trouble playing sports so I returned home early because I was getting tired, and dizzy.

Open Source Mac

To those that know me, know me as an avid stumbler. Honestly I’ll use Firefox’s extension at least once every few minutes. Today my obsessive stumbling brought me to downloadpedia, to this page in particular: “Open Source Mac“.

This is amazing, I’m not sure if it states all, but it does state many of the open source applications for the mac. This brings together our two favourite things; macs and open source.

There is a Windows page as well.

Perfect match

I couldn’t help but nod in agreement.

Computers are incredibly fast, accurate, and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate, and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination. ~ Albert Einstein

Delving into rails

RailsJust a few days ago I started getting into Ruby on Rails and I’m completely and utterly hooked. It’s so brilliantly unique and simple that I just can’t help but fall in love with it. The whole Model-View-Controller is ingenious and makes developing database-styled web sites incredibly simple.

My previous background knowledge with Ruby has aided me quite a bit with Rails since it is a Ruby based framework. Ruby is the language, Rails is the framework.

Now, I haven’t played around with RoR enough to be able to give an in depth analysis and compare it to others such as (Cake)PHP. I will however say that from my experience with PHP and RoR, Rails wins my vote hands down. It is the standard on how web-development should be. The idea of Don’t Repeat Yourself and Convention over Configuration is the ideal philosophy.

The beginning of school

Today was, being September 4th, the first day of school. Usually I dread going back to school because I enjoy my time off so much. This time, I was looking forward to going back to school since I was beginning to get bored of my 2 month long vacation. I now dread going back to school tomorrow.
