A Completely New Form of Teaching.
I had a little conversation with my parents about my mid-term report card. Although generally pleased, they were a little disappointed by my poor biology mark. My dad had a little talk with me where I attempted to explain that although part of the blame lies within my own laziness, the other part lies within my trouble in adjusting to a new style of teaching I have not yet encountered.
My biology teacher has these little EQ Quizzes that we have once per week. These quizzes cover nothing that we have learned in class but rather textbook pages assigned to us for that particular week at the beginning of the semester. Therefore the only possible way to do well in them is to actually study. I haven’t studied for a test since grade 5. The only times I actually study are during the exam week where I need to review the material taught during the beginning of the course. I’ve never found the need to study, ever.
My theory is that as long as I listen in class and make occasional notes for repetition I will know all the material covered during that unit and will not forget it. However this theory goes to the dogs with these EQ Quizzes where the material isn’t actually taught in class. One must study to do well. And although I know this, I know that I do not know the material and that I must study, my warped mentality manages to convince me otherwise, convinces me that I actually know the material.
Although not worth a lot on their own, the EQ Quizzes add up and add up fast. That’s why during the beginning of the semester my marks were hit really hard. In every other aspect of biology I get exceptionally high marks, in fact, I haven’t gotten anything below an 85% on any assignment. The EQ Quizzes are the ones that are completely dragging my mark down. Luckily I’ve started to overcome that mentality and am actually studying for the tests.
